Experiencing the Forest Rangers of Xiashu Forest Farm: Guardians of the Green Realm
Nestled in the eastern reaches of the Ningzhen Mountains, Xiashu Forest Farm, established in 1925 as the practice forest for Jiangsu’s first advanced agricultural school, has transformed into a vibrant 314.4-hectare public welfare forest. Managed by Nanjing Forestry University, financial constraints have reduced the workforce to just five part-time rangers, a stark contrast to the over twenty staff members in the past. Our club members visited these rangers, immersing themselves in their daily routines and uncovering the realities of forest and ranger survival.
Despite earning minimal wages, the rangers patrol tirelessly each day, vigilant against fires and illegal logging. Their work is arduous, hindered by long patrol routes, inadequate fire prevention systems, and limited funding.
National subsidies of 50 yuan per mu annually (approximately 195,800 yuan per year) barely cover operational costs, resulting in underdeveloped infrastructure such as patrol paths and water systems. Pests like pine wood nematodes exacerbate the challenges, requiring specialized treatment that funding cannot support.
Nevertheless, Xiashu Forest Farm thrives as a biodiversity haven, providing refuge for endangered species including badgers and wild boars. Cultural landmarks, such as the tomb of Zeng Bu, a Northern Song Dynasty official, and historic tea-picking trails, enrich the area’s historical significance. Mount Wuqi, rising 377.8 meters, houses ancient temples and once internationally acclaimed cloud-mist tea plantations.
The future remains uncertain, with plans for a pumped-storage power station threatening to replace over a thousand acres of forest. Yet, the rangers remain steadfast in their commitment to preserving this green sanctuary. The farm also serves as an educational hub, annually hosting over 6,000 forestry students from Nanjing Forestry University for internships.
Xiashu Forest Farm exemplifies the harmonious coexistence of humanity and nature, nurturing life amid adversity through dedication. The legacy forged by the rangers and history stands as a beacon of sustainable coexistence. Inspired, my companions and I documented this experience in a documentary.
